Fried Mango Modak – Delicious and Healthy Naivedya Recipe

Fried Mango Modak is a famous Naivedya/offereing recipe. It is offered to Lord Ganesha on Sankashti Chaturthi.

Sankashti Chaturthi

The Hindu festival of Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha (second fortnight of a lunar month) every month and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

People perform upvas or fast on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi in order to pray to the God of wealth and prosperity. In many Hindu traditions, this observance is believed to reduce obstacles and problems in our lives. During the fast, people consume only special fasting food, water, and fruits, and then break their fasts after viewing the moon. This is a traditional way to honor Lord Ganesha.

It is a day for celebration and devotion and special meals are offered to Lord Ganesha.


“Modak” is the most important among the various sweets offered to Ganpati Bappa. Modaks are made in many different varieties across the world but the most common are “Olya Naralache Modak”. These can be either fried or steamed. You can find my recipe of fried Modak or “Talniche Modak” here.

In this article, I will be sharing with you my recipe for Fried Mango Modak.

Mango – The King of Fruits

The mango is a delicious stone fruit. This tropical tree grows in the northeastern and northwestern areas of India and Bangladesh. Its origins are not known, but it is thought to have originated from the region between northwestern Myanmar and eastern Thailand. However, it is now widely grown in a wide range of parts of the world.

Mango is popular around the world, and is often used in desserts and drinks. It has a distinct fragrance and taste and are generally found in hot, dry areas.

It can be eaten raw or in cooked form. Coconut water is also beneficial for the skin and intestine. It also helps to boost your energy level and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Coconut is used in various recipes in different forms. In this article, I will show you how I used it to make delicious Modak.

What is Modak?

Modak is a traditional Maharashtrian dessert. It is basically a sweet dumpling made of flour and stuffed using different ingredients.

It can be fried or steamed. Either way it tastes great.

In this recipe, I will show you how I combined the taste and goodness of Mangoes and Coconut to make delicious Fried Mango Modak.

  • Kadhai/Pan
  • Mesh Strainer

  • 1 Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 Cup Grated Jaggery
  • Pulp of 2 Mangoes Tastes best with Alphonso mango. You may use any mango of your choice.
  • 1 Tsp Khus-Khus/Poppy seeds
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped dry fruits I have used Cashew nuts, Almonds and Pistachios
  • 2 Tbsp Roasted Lotus seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Ghee/oil For the stuffing tadka
  • 2 Cups Maida/All purpose flour
  • 1/2 Cup Rava/Suji/Semolina
  • 3/4 Cup Milk/Water
  • 2 Tbsp Ghee/oil To add to the dough
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee/oil For frying


  • We need the stuffing to cool down completely before we make the Modak. So, let us make the stuffing first.
  • Take 1 Tbsp ghee/oil in a pan and heat it. You may try using Pristine Fields of Gold- Desi ghee for this recipe.
  • Add poppy seeds and let it crackle. Now add the grated coconut and mix well. 
  • Cook a little till the moisture in coconut dries up.
  • Add the mango pulp.
  • Mix well and cook till the moisture dries up.
  • Add jaggery and mix well. 
  • Cook until the jaggery is completely melted and it starts to lose moisture. You need to be very careful about this as over cooking may lead to caramalization of jaggery.
  • When cooked, remove the mixture in a bowl and let it cool completely. 
  • Add the roasted lotus seeds and dry fruits and mix well.
  • Take maida and rava in a bowl and add salt and knead a soft dough. You can use either Milk or Water to knead the dough. Cover and set the dough aside for 20-25 mins.

  • After the rest time is over, take the dough and knead it a little to give it a uniform texture. Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each ball and add sufficient amount of stuffing to this and shape it into a modak. 
  • Fry the Modak in Oil or Ghee on medium flame until it gets a golden color.
  • These Modaks taste good when served hot with desi ghee.

Experimenting with food is what I love most. You could also do so by trying to modify the stuffing of this delicious recipe by adding some other interesting ingredient.
